• Power as ascertained through the production and circulation of bronze implements

  Abstract: Regarding each stage in the production and circulation of bronze implements in the Yayoi period, I reconstruct the persons involved in each act and consider what kinds of relations of authority pertained among those actors. For this contribution in particular, I focus on northern Kyushu of the Late Yayoi period. With regards to the concept of power, I base my approach not simply on the conventional framework of power as the manifestation of coercive force on the part of a wielder of authority in conjunction with social development, but taking into account as well a so-called Foucauldian analysis of power, I expand the notion to include relations of mutual expectation and conformity. Items for analysis include (1) the methods of obtaining various materials at the preparatory stage for production, (2) the creation of new forms and the carving of the products into the molds at the stage of production, and (3) the modes of distributing products all at once or in continual fashion at the stage of circulation. At each stage I reconstruct the actors, and as a result of analyzing the relationships of power among these actors, I conclude that while the so-called chiefs may have endeavored to exercise coercive authority over each stage of the production and circulation of bronzes, as the actual state of affairs this was not realized, but rather that these tasks were performed amidst a balance among the actors for the stability and maintenance of society.

• The economics of lithic supply: A study of specialized lithic industries

  Abstract: This paper studies the spatial arrangements of lithic industries in specialization economies in terms of a comparison with lithic industries of economies embedded in subsistence. Theoretical perspectives are based on the economic geographical model concerning specialization economies and the behavioral ecological model concerning economies embedded in subsistence.
  　As a case study, pressure blade industries by high-level technologies involving high time costs, which perhaps employed the lever pressure technique, are examined, focusing especially on the industries of the Initial Jomon period in Hokkaido, the Early Bronze Age in the Southern Levant and the Aegean, and the Classic period in the Maya region. It becomes clear that blade pressure flaking by high-level technologies was conducted firmly at habitation sites on the side of economies embedded in subsistence, whereas it was concentrated in the vicinity of lithic sources on the other side of full-time specialization economies, with attached part-time specializations having different aspects from them (e.g. at the limited area in a city). The study of the spatial arrangements of lithic industries is helpful to search for a specialization-nonspecialization continuum, economy and society in the past.

• The manifestations and transformations of regionality in large-sized burial jars in the first half of the Yayoi period

  Abstract: The period from the latter half of the Early to the first half of the Middle Yayoi has come to be recognized as a major turning point for Yayoi society. In particular, as bronze implements flowed into Japan through northern Kyushu as the point of entry at the end of the Early and start of the Middle Yayoi period, a model of differential relations emerging between the more advanced and less developed regions centering on the coast of the Genkai Sea, where burials with bronzes as grave goods are plentiful, has come to be established as the image for all of northern Kyushu society, and analyses of regionality with regard to the form of large-sized burial jars have been greatly influenced accordingly. In order to clarify the validity of this model, the current contribution analyzed the regionality of large-sized burial jars of the first half of the Yayoi period using seriation graphs. As a result, changes in form centering on the coastal region of the Genkai sea that had previously been assumed were not confirmed. Also, the actual state regarding the regionality of various attributes of large-sized burial jars was clarified, and considerations were made of the existence of phase shifts among the attributes, and of the backgrounds for changes in regionality of those individual attributes.

• Emergence and development of Kumedera-style eaves tiles: The nature of Kumedera temple in the Fujiwara palace period

  Abstract: Kumedera-style eaves tiles have long been touched upon in the history of roof tile research, but as there have been no scholarly articles centered on them, an examination of these tiles was made in this contribution from the perspective of the design and techniques of manufacture.
  　First, it is pointed out that the flat eaves tiles of the Kawachidera abandoned temple style, which are similar in design to Kumedera-style flat eaves tiles, were produced by an artisanal group from a shared lineage, clarifying that Kumedera-style eaves tiles emerged through the influence of eaves tiles of the Kawachidera abandoned temple style. Then, for the Kotō-style flat eaves tiles, which bear a design similar to those of the Kumedera and Kawachidera abandoned temple styles, as there are differences with the eaves tiles of the Kawachidera abandoned temple style in terms of manufacturing techniques and design characteristics, the Kotō-style flat eaves tiles cannot be regarded as the ancestral form, indicating that the Kumedera-style eaves tiles developed independently, with eaves tiles of the Kawachidera abandoned temple style as the starting point.
  　Next, an examination was made of aspects of the manufacturing techniques of Kumedera-style round eaves tiles, such as the progression of mold flaws and the rotational orientation when fixing the endpiece, clarifying the existence of two types of tiles, “temple use” items supplied to Kumedera temple and “palace use” items provided to the Fujiwara palace. Also, as the periods of manufacture for temple versus palace use tiles did not overlap and the quality of firing also differed, indicating that palace use items alone were produced at a kiln other than the Kume kiln itself, the possibility is pointed out of Kumedera-style eaves tile production being completely incorporated at one point into the palace construction organization. This provides a new perspective on the management of artisans in the Fujiwara palace period. Also, in examining the distribution of temple use tiles, as the existence of Fujiwara no Fuhito looms in the background, further evidence is provided for the likelihood that Kumedera of the Fujiwara palace period was Umayasaka temple.
