• A study on the remains of a Kofun period individual at the Kanai Higashiura Site, Gunma Prefecture: Local rulership of a Kofun period chief and the hierarchical structure of subordinate groups

  Abstract: This paper examines the existence of a Kofun period chief by examining the remains of a male individual found at the Kanai Higashiura Site, Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture. The man was killed while wearing armor by the eruption of Mt. Haruna at the end of the 5th century. An analysis of excavated material surrounding the man suggests that he was the highest-ranking chief of the region, and was performing rituals at the time.
  　Due to traits observed in the remains of the individual, subsequent examination of the hierarchy of tombs in the late 5th century in this area was conducted. As a result is has been suggested that the individual was the head of a migrant group who had emigrated to the foot of Mt. Haruna from the Korean Peninsula, and that he had organized a complex group comprised of both migrants and Japanese people under his control.
  　It was also presumed that the immigrants had been accepted by the local chiefs and that the individual had been commissioned to perform local rituals. It has been concluded that this mobility of the local management group was a characteristic of Kofun period society.

• A reconsideration of roof tile artisanal traditions in the Harima and Kinai regions at the end of the medieval period

  Abstract:　For Medieval roof tile research from the twelfth to around the sixteenth centuries, while a nationwide chronology has been compiled in recent years based on manufacturing technology, for roof tiles of the second half of the sixteenth century, identity in terms of decoration on the endpiece and inscriptions on the tiles has been given highest priority, and analysis of manufacturing technology has been insufficient. In the midst of these developments, research debating lines of artisanal transmission has progressed, and in the Harima/Kinai regions in particular discussion of the Yamato/Shitennōji/Himeji artisanal lines has taken on the position of established theory. However, this discussion is based on the names and places of residence clearly indicated on inscribed tiles, and on same-mold relations among endpiece patterns, while manufacturing technology has been neglected.
  　This contribution takes up sites of fortified residences and temples from the middle to latter portions of the sixteenth century, and using as materials flat eaves tiles for which there is rich variation in attributes related to manufacturing technology and endpiece patterns, analyzes both types of attributes. Based on the correlations among attributes yielded by the analysis, a complicated set of artisanal traditions comprising the “Eastern Harima,” “Western Harima,” and “Settsu/Kawachi” lines, which could not be discovered from same-mold relations alone, and relations of technological influence visible among these lines, were made clear. Further, regarding the Eastern and Western Harima lines, it is clearly shown that these emerged as a result of developing their own originality even while receiving technological influence from both the Yamato and Settsu lines, thereby obtaining new knowledge regarding the process of emergence of artisanal traditions. The methodology of this research, which analyzes both manufacturing technology and relations of identity among inscriptions and mold patterns, is thought to contribute thereby to the clarification of the complicated relationships of influence and exchange among lines of artisans of this period.
