• Jomon culture from the world’s perspective: Toward internationalization

  Abstract:In this paper I argue the necessity of the internationalization of the study of Jomon culture. This is necessary because we need to acquire multiple archaeological perspectives and to have our study accepted in the international academic field. Following that, I discuss the nature of Jomon culture from a world-wide comparative perspective. It has long been considered that Jomon culture was based on a hunter-gatherer economy and the society shifted into the Neolithic stage along with the emergence of a sedentary lifestyle. However, I consider that sedentism was merely the first step, and that the qualitative change in Jomon society had not yet been achieved at that time. I argue that the qualitative change to the Neolithic was made with the introduction of paddy field agriculture. In comparison with other hunter-gatherer societies around the world, a distinctive feature of Jomon culture is that the society did not achieved the fully qualitative change at the first step. We need to discuss this phenomenon not only from the perspective of classical evolutionary determinism but also from the perspective of indeterminism, based on human free-will.

• Yayoi culture from the world’s perspective: Characteristics of Yayoi culture

  Abstract: In this paper, I contextualize the nature of Yayoi Period society through a comparative-archaeological approach in order to contribute to the internationalization of Japanese archaeology. There exists a well-established tradition of internationalization of research within East Asia, in particular, between China, Korea, and Japan. Within Japanese-Korean archaeology, imported goods have long been used as evidence of intercultural relations, and research on technology and typological, and chronological relationships has been greatly advanced. The accumulation of data and research in both Japan and Korea has reached a level which enables full-fledged comparative-archaeological research. This paper thus represents my attempt to contribute to this dialogue. I was led to the following conclusions. While North Kyūshū and the southern Korean Peninsula were both under Han China's investiture system, the treatment they received greatly differed. As a result, while the Korean Peninsula was not significantly affected by the weakening of Han power, the preferential treatment received by North Kyūshū meant that China's political fluctuations were felt palpably. As previous research indicates, a burgeoning trade network did expand east from Kyūshū in the 1st century AD; the nature of the goods, however, implies that the new trade network was not strongly political in character. Additionally, I employed an analysis of pottery and its production within Rome and its surrounding areas as a target for comparison with the Han dynasty and its periphery. Furthermore, I emphasized that while technology spread out from Han China to neighboring regions in a down-the-line fashion, kilns and other technology tended to only temporarily spread out from Roman territory, without becoming permanently rooted in the surrounding areas. This difference in technology transmission indicates the diverse nature of center-periphery relations.

• Inward-flexing-rim pottery: Aspects of the end of the Early to the start of the Middle Yayoi periods in western Nagato

  Abstract: Inward-flexing-rim pottery is mainly distributed from western Nagato to western Suō from the early to middle portions of the Middle Yayoi period. This pottery is characterized by making the edge of the mouth of a jar or pot turn upwards in the shape of a socket. This pottery is sparse in the Kawanaka area, in which the Ayaragigō site is located, being mainly distributed in surrounding areas. From an examination of the above-mentioned situation and the characteristics of the pottery, along with its relationships of association in archaeological features, I concluded that inward-flexing-rim pottery emerged as a result of western Nagato as a whole receiving strong influence from Jōnokoshi type pottery, which entered in the early Middle Yayoi period, centering on the Kawanaka area. Additionally, the Kawanaka area is regarded as having experienced a temporary sea level rise in the Middle Yayoi period, possibly due to storm surges or tsunami, and based on the results of this examination, I pointed out the possibility of this occurring in early Middle Yayoi period and being reflected in the waxing and waning of sites.

• Inter-regional relationships in the Late to Final Yayoi periods: Seen from the distribution pattern of comma-shaped beads in western Japan

  Abstract: Comma-shaped beads became popular and came to occupy an important position in the grave good assemblage in the Late Yayoi period. However, how they were exchanged and ended up in their respective contexts has not been fully understood. This paper approaches these issues by examining the distribution of comma-shaped beads in the Late to Final Yayoi periods. Two hundred sixty-eight beads from Late to Final Yayoi burials of western Japan were classified by attributes indicating regions of production, and the distributions of classified types were examined. The outcomes are as follows: (1) as suggested in some previous studies, different types of beads were produced in different regions, (2) the number of beads deposited in burials and their types both increased from the second half of the Late Yayoi period, and (3) their distribution patterns differ between the types. These observations suggest that the beads were produced in a number of regions and distributed through distinct networks. This further suggests that there was no established center of the production and distribution of beads in the period. The current study has also revealed that the size of beads correlates with the ranking of the deceased. This suggests that the elites of emerging regional polities competed over access to different networks of interaction for enhancing their prestige.
