• Copper production and distribution in ancient Japan

  Abstract: In ancient Japan, the state directly managed copper mines for the purpose of minting coins. These state owned copper mines produced material not only for coins, but also copper used privately by the aristocracy. Around the copper mines, private foundries involved with the mine offices produced copperwares. Thus the state did not monopolize copper production, but rather copper production by the state enabled the private production and distribution of copper. In ancient production, the state and the people depended on each other. 　This work was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number JP17H00834.

• A reevaluation of Kasori-B-style pottery: Change in interregional relations within the Japanese archipelago in the middle portion of the Late Jōmon period

  Abstract: The purpose of this contribution is to clarify changes in interregional relations within the Japanese archipelago in the middle portion of the Late Jōmon period, through a spatio-temporal examination of Kasori-B-style pottery.
  　The phenomenon of wide-area distribution of pottery is seen in the Late Jōmon period, and it has been pointed out that the influence of assemblages of Kantō derivation extended as far as western Japan. As Kantō-derived assemblages are no longer recovered in western Japan in the middle portion of the Late Jōmon, however, some change is surmised to have occurred in aspects of intergroup exchange between eastern and western Japan.
  　In order to clarify the actual condition of that change in interaction, this contribution took Kasori-B-style pottery recovered from sites located in Kantō, and examined its distribution after carrying out research on its classification and chronology.
  　As a result, an increase in activity in intergroup exchange was seen to have occurred between the Tōhoku and Kantō regions in the middle portion of the Late Jōmon period. The possibility is noted that this change in interregional relations within eastern Japan exerted some influence on the interactions of groups between eastern and western Japan as well.

• Upland and lowland settlements in the Yayoi period: Conditions seen from stone arrowheads of the Akashi River basin as a local region

  Abstract: Yayoi period upland settlements, due to their formation both in locations environmentally unfavorable to wet rice cultivation and in extremely limited periods, have heretofore been examined by many researchers out of a need to clarify their distinctive nature. As a result, opinions taking their peculiar nature as a premise are common, and they have been perceived as daughter villages that have branched off from lowland settlements as military or defensive facilities, or for monitoring the Seto Inland Sea, and so forth. This type of opinion is most often based on examinations made within a single site, or predicated on assumptions that these sites are peculiar, while studies making careful analyses of artifacts are few. Accordingly it can be said that a comparison of artifacts from upland and lowland settlements, seeking out their points of commonality and difference, is needed. In that regard, the current contribution utilized stone tools made of sanukite and centering on stone arrowheads, and conducted a comparative examination of upland and lowland sites within a single local region. As a result, it became clear that trade routes for the production and distribution of stone tools differed distinctly for upland versus lowland settlements. With regard to the stone arrowheads’ shapes and methods of manufacture as well, it was pointed out that the regions from which influence was received similarly differed between upland and lowland settlements. To make a comprehensive judgment, for upland settlements the influence of the Kinai region centering on Osaka Bay coastal areas was ascertained as strong, whereas for lowland settlements it was the influence of eastern Seto Inland Sea areas such as Kibi and Sanuki, so it can be said that upland settlements did not form as daughter villages of lowland communities. In other words upland sites were regular settlements having an independent trade network, and in the Akashi River basin for which the analysis was conducted, these are thought to have moved into the highlands from the east around the latter half of the Middle Yayoi period.

• On B-type drooping-rim jars: Aspects of ceramics of the latter half of the Middle Yayoi period and their social background in Suō

  Abstract: In the latter half of the Middle Yayoi period, B-type drooping-rim jars are distributed centering on Suō and extending to the central portion of Iyo. This jar is characterized by a rim with a drooping lip that is decorated on its outer surface with a mountain-shaped pattern, and by bands of clay applied as decoration to the neck and trunk; it developed under the influence of Sugu-style pottery and ceramics of the Setouchi area centered on eastern Iyo at the time of the emergence of concave-line-pattern pottery which paralleled the latter stage of Sugu I and the earlier stage of Sugu II. Subsequently, at the end of the Middle Yayoi, while Sugu-style pottery was dominant in the western portion of Suō, as ceramics of the concave-line-pattern tradition are seen in eastern Suō, it is clear that the distribution of B-type drooping rim jars was being dismantled under the influence of northern Kyushu and western Setouchi. Also, as one cause for this, there were only small-scale settlements in Suō at the end of Middle Yayoi period, and it is assumed that a difference in productive capacity had developed in comparison with northern Kyushu and central Iyo.
