• The emergence process and regionality of jade beads in Northern Kyushu

  Abstract: 　Jade beads excavated from Yayoi period tombs in Northern Kyushu are made of material from Niigata prefecture and have a variety of forms, such as comma-shaped, animal-shaped, cord-marked, and others. In the Kofun period, comma-shaped beads (magatama) became a central burial good in mounded tombs. Typological studies of these beads started in the 1980s, and by the late 1990s lithic analysis narrowed the source of their jade to the Itoigawa river in Niigata prefecture; lithic source analysis of jasper tubular beads also progressed. As a result, it was theorized that jade beads were produced in Northern Kyushu using material from the Itoigawa river obtained via exchange, but this notion has since been refuted. The theory that Yayoi beads were repurposed from Jōmon beads, along with the theory that the emergence of comma-shaped beads was due to the influence of personal accessories from the Korean peninsula, led to the idea that their development was the result of admixture.
  　In this paper, 141 jade beads from Fukuoka, Ōita, Saga, and Nagasaki prefectures were selected and their typology, distribution, and sizes were analyzed. The results show that the assemblage of northwestern Kyushu was primarily made up of regular and small comma-shaped beads, while semi-cylindrical beads and Hokuriku-style beads were mainly found in northeastern Kyushu, with two epochs recognized over the period of their emergence. The author concludes that the cause behind the formation of regional differences in the style of personal adornment with jade and jasper beads, which was led by the Fukuoka plain and Karatsu regions, was due to exchange with Hokuriku and the importation of Hokuriku-style beads.

• The present state and future of burial orientation research

  Abstract:　The volume of research and the fragmentation of study areas within the field of burial orientation research has made a systematic understanding of the field’s history an issue for many years. In this paper, the author reviews the literature on pre-historic (Jōmon to Kofun period) burial orientation and examines issues faced by the field. As a result, the author recognizes that the field needs to introduce a diachronic perspective and is lacking in the use of objective evidence in landscape analyses. Future research needs to reconsider the norms and values regarding burial orientation that existed in the past by utilizing ethnographic analogy and a diachronic understanding of the interactions between humans, their landscapes, and the natural environment.

• The philosophy of cultural resource preservation and restoration as seen in Tsūron kōkogaku: The excavations of Rome and Pompeii as seen by HAMADA Kōsaku

  Abstract:　Hamada Kōsaku’s seminal work Tsūron kōkogaku (An introduction to archaeology) greatly contributed to the spread of archaeological methodology during the early days of the discipline in Japan. It is not widely known, however, that in addition to detailing various research methods, the book also describes the preservation and restoration of archaeological sites, features, and artifacts. When Hamada went to Europe to study archaeological methodology, he visited the excavation sites of Rome and Pompeii and witnessed a change in Italy’s policy towards archaeological excavation at that time, which placed an emphasis on conservation and restoration. In contrast, the system in Japan for protecting cultural resources was not well established at the time. Having been exposed to the forefront of Western classical archaeology in Rome and Pompeii, Hamada quickly recognized the need for the preservation and restoration of archaeological sites, features, and artifacts, and advocated this in his book Tsūron kōkogaku.
