- Historical perspectives and narratives in Sanage Kiln research from the 1950s to the 1960s
- INOUE Hayata
Abstract: TheSanageKilnsitecomplexisafamoustypesitefortheceramicchronologyoftheTōkai

research have mainly come from the perspective of archaeological survey history and chronology.
However, therehasbeenalackofhistoriographicalexamination regardingthehistoricalperspectives

In this paper, I focus on the academic achievements of Shōichi Narasaki, who led Sanage Kiln
researchfromthe1950stothe1960s. Iconfirmthathisinterest insocio-economichistoryisrootedin

- The current status of Heian-kyō and the problems it faces from the perspective of
archaeological heritage management

thisapproachhaschangedinresponsetothedevelopmentofprivateexcavationorganizationsandthe
increasinguseofdigital technology.However, inareasthatseealargenumberofexcavations, suchas
the area of the Heian-kyō (Heian capital) site, archaeological heritage management has not been
analyzed using the vast amount of information that has been generated by past excavations. Of
particular concern are the many private excavation organizations that have entered the field;
specificallythereareconcernsregardingseveralaspectsofthisexcavationsystem. Inthisstudy, Ifirst
organized and clarified the state of archaeological heritage management through the case study of
excavationsurveysattheHeian-kyōsite.
To this end the author created diagrams showing the distribution of excavation areas and the
chronological sequence of archaeological surveys, including the organizations responsible for each
survey.Next, Icollectedinformationonsitebriefingsessions,analyzingthenumberofparticipantsand
their location, and created time-series infographics. Then I investigated the status of excavation report
publication and distribution, including electronic publications. This survey revealed that some
excavation reports are too difficult for average citizens to access. Through the above analyses,
especiallyconcerning theorganizationsthatconductarchaeologicalsurveys, Ihave clarifiedthecurrent
statusofarchaeologicalheritagemanagementandtheissuesit faces.
Finally, based on the previous analysis, I discussed the future potential of archaeological heritage
management. Inthefuture,archaeologicalheritagemanagementresearchshouldnotonlyfocusonthe
participation of private excavation organizations, but also on the inclusion of various forms of survey
organizations.

RESEARCH NOTES
- An experimental study on the production techniques of Haji ware of the Late Heian period:
Toward regional comparisons of Kyōto-style vessels
- TATEUCHI Kai
Abstract: In the 12th century, Kyōto-style Haji ware diffused into eastern Japan. In order to
understand its dissemination and the interactions among potters, a focus on their production
techniques is crucial. Despite this, many aspects of the production techniques for these vessels remain
unclear, and there has been limited experimental archaeology on the topic. Therefore, this study seeks
to reconstruct the tools and motions employed during production based on the production traces left
on artifacts. First, a hypothesis was formulated regarding the tools and motions involved in production
based on analysis of the production traces, and then production experiments were conducted to test
the hypothesis. The results suggest the possibility of different shaping techniques being employed
depending on the vessel’s size. Furthermore, previously unrecognized production processes were made
clear, such as the use of tools to shape the inner surface of vessels and tools for adjusting the outer
surface. Finally, despite the limitations of this study, the author stresses the need for continued
observation of archaeological materials and further production experiments.

- The philosophy of cultural resource preservation and restoration as seen in Tsūron kōkogaku: The excavations of Rome and Pompeii as seen by HAMADA Kōsaku
- SUGIYAMA Cohe
Abstract: Hamada Kōsaku’s seminal work Tsūron kōkogaku (An introduction to archaeology) greatly contributed to the spread of archaeological methodology during the early days of the discipline in Japan. It is not widely known, however, that in addition to detailing various research methods, the book also describes the preservation and restoration of archaeological sites, features, and artifacts. When Hamada went to Europe to study archaeological methodology, he visited the excavation sites of Rome and Pompeii and witnessed a change in Italy’s policy towards archaeological excavation at that time, which placed an emphasis on conservation and restoration. In contrast, the system in Japan for protecting cultural resources was not well established at the time. Having been exposed to the forefront of Western classical archaeology in Rome and Pompeii, Hamada quickly recognized the need for the preservation and restoration of archaeological sites, features, and artifacts, and advocated this in his book Tsūron kōkogaku.
